St George, 5 October 2023

St George Cultural Centre, QLD, Mandandanji, Kooma, Bigambul Country

St George Cultural Centre stands on the traditional lands of the Mandandanji, Kooma, Bigambul People.

St George Cultural Hall (now Cultural Centre) is over 100 years old and is the focal point of the Cultural Centre in which it stands. St George is a fairly large rural township located in southwest Queensland, about 550km west of Brisbane. Interestingly, the town claims that the only known Aboriginal fighter pilot to serve in World War II – Warrant Officer Leonard Victor Waters – comes from the local area and his name is remembered on a pilots’ memorial opposite the St George Visitor Information Centre on the Balonne River. The population today is around 3000.
