Rainbow Beach, 17 December 2023

Rainbow Beach Community Centre Hall, QLD, Butchulla Country

Rainbow Beach Community Centre Hall stands on the traditional lands of the Butchulla People.

Rainbow Beach Community Centre Hall is only 11 years old and is an evacuation centre to accommodate all the beach campers and holiday makers if emergencies crop up. They have all sorts of activities in there every day. CIRS manages the hall for Gympie Regional Council and it is run completely by volunteers happy to show pride in their beautiful village.

Festival of Small Halls returns to Rainbow Beach on Sunday, 17 December 2023 with Jackie Marshall and Assynt.

Opening the show will be local act Sheryl Anderson!

Sheryl’s first public performance was as a three-year-old in a community hall – the MC asked if anyone would like to sing a song, so she ran up and sang “Morning Town Ride”. Sheryl lost that spontaneity over the years but she’s finding courage again to do what she loves, including writing, performing, and wearing as many colours as possible. Sheryl’s first published poem, in an anthology of young Australian writers, was about Rainbow Beach. She fell in love with Rainbow as a child and is now fulfilling her dream of living there full time, making connections with the people, communities, and coffee.

A writer for many years, Sheryl works with people to tell their own stories, then facilitate those stories into a way of sharing with others – through storytelling, theatre productions, published or unique handmade books. Her experience in drama and writing with community usually culminates in a finished script, then production, often with people with little or no previous experience of drama or performance. For the last few years, through Retelling Tales, she listens to and record people’s stories, returning them, to be kept and treasured for their families and future generations.
