Port Albert Mechanics Hall, VIC, Gunaikurnai Country

Port Albert Mechanics Hall stands on the traditional lands of the Gunaikurnai People.
Since 1878 when it was first built, the Port Albert Mechanics’ Institute Hall has been part of the life-blood of this charming seaside town in Victoria’s Gippsland.
Once a bustling port after settlement in the 1840s – one of the oldest in Victoria – Port Albert has experienced huge changes over the years, first with the advent of the railway and the demise of the fishing industry, and later the effects of drought.
The Port Albert Mechanics’ Hall has remained steadfast throughout the decades, serving as a venue for with dances, concerts, local cinema and was even the venue for a roller skating competition in the 1890s.
The Hall underwent a major refurbishment after king tides inundated the floor with inches of water and despite periods when there was difficulty raising funds for repair, continues to stand proudly in service to the community today.
