There is something about Kellie Loder’s voice that reaches deep inside your body, unearthing feelings you thought were dealt with (or successfully hidden). It’s good to feel them, though, and Loder is the best company, their powerhouse vocals and vulnerable songwriting acting as buoy and guide

Wow is my thought. Kellie you’re like everything. You have such a cool sound, such a cool vibe, such a cool voice. I feel like you got us, we’re in the palm of your hand. The fact that you are so comfortable, and you bring the audience, you bring us in with you, I’m sure everybody in their living room was singing along, and I think that from this moment on your life is never going to be the same. I think you are the now – Howie Mandel, Canada’s Got Talent

Van Dijk & Mcdonald image 3

Van Dijk & Mcdonald

From Meanjin/Brisbane, Jan Van Dijk & Conor McDonald marry fiddle, guitar and voice in an evocative exploration of folk music. Inspired by tradition, their original fiddle tunes and songs search out the elusive and hard to capture qualities of the genre.

Van Dijk writes original tunes that are uniquely his own but the seeds come from many varied and wonderful places. He has enjoyed many tours and musical immersions targeting the hot spots of traditional music around the world. His playing is heavily informed from these travels, from the fiddle styles of Ireland and France to the Celtic haven that is the Maritimes of East Coast Canada to the Cajun and Jazz infused wilds of Louisiana.

It has been said that his playing at times sounds far off and away like the echoes of old stories from the next mountain over, and yet the honesty and vulnerability in his bowed notes hooks the music right back into the here and now.

Jan’s collaborations over the years include some wonderful years with acclaimed fingerstyle guitarist Jevan Cole recording many albums culminating in ‘Sins of a lil Later Kiss’ produced by Ian Haug (Powderfinger) which they toured around Australia and Canada. An earlier album with Cole and vocalist Seamus Kirkpatrick ‘Crows Three’ attracted such praise as ‘…these musicians are so steeped in the tradition that they are completely free to reinvent it’. More recently his work with the late great master guitarist Ewan MacKenzie leaves behind a rich legacy of shared improvisations and visions of smiling while playing.

A friend of the Festival of Small Halls since its inception in Australia, Jan has performed previously with Cole & Van Dijk and The Starboard Cannons.

For the 2024 Spring Tour he invites treasured collaborator Conor Mcdonald, a remarkably gifted guitarist and songwriter who’s songs are raw and arresting, bursting with curiosity and adventure. Equally a fan of the old field recordings as he is the brave new world of contemporary folk, Conor’s reflective songwriting seeks out the personal in the traditional, crafting mesmerising vocal compositions that always invite a singular connection with the listener. As he rolls through a set one can hear a broad love of genres in his guitar stylings, from Country Blues to Irish Folk to vintage Jazz and Old Time music.

As a founding member of Cigany Weaver he is a much loved performer at major Folk Festivals around Australia. Conor and Jan also perform regularly with JB Paterson, Run Rabbit and Van Dijk & the Faint Tradition. Conor also enjoys a rich solo songwriting career with full band.
