Ouyen, 23 March 2022

Roxy Theatre Ouyen, VIC

Just over 100 kilometres south of Mildura in the far north-west of Victoria you’ll find the one-time vanilla slice capital of Australia, Ouyen.

As if that claim to fame wasn’t enough, Ouyen is also home to The Roxy Theatre, a beautifully restored and rare example of a sub-tropical picture theatre built in 1936.

Beyond its handsome and solid art deco inspired façade, both sides of The Roxy’s walls can still be raised to allow for cross ventilation, a hallmark of the sub-tropical style. How cool is that?!

An historic theatre, much of the venue remains exactly as it was when it was first built in the mid-30s.
These days, The Roxy is a largely volunteer-run arts precinct and function centre and an integral part of the community, with films and events still regularly scheduled through the year.
