Maryborough

This was a good place for PL Travers to find Mary Poppin’s famous ‘spoonful of sugar’ – Maryborough and surrounds has been home to several sugar mills, as well as being the birthplace of the famous author. The town is set along the Mary River – a body of water named for Lady Mary Lennox and now host to the endangered Mary River turtle. Known as the Heritage City of Queensland, Maryborough has put itself on the map in many ways – perhaps most alarmingly as the home of Australia’s only outbreak of pneumonic plague.
