Glenden, 11 October 2023

Glenden Recreation Centre, QLD, Jangga Country

Glenden Recreation Centre stands on the traditional lands of the Jangga People.

The Glenden Recreation Centre is the focal point for Glenden’s population of around 477 residents. The town has six community groups and six community facilities including, as well as this recreation centre, a pool, gym, library, parks, and playgrounds that complement the town centre.

Glenden, 110km west of Mackay, was originally designed and constructed by Mount Isa Mines Ltd (now Glencore) in 1981, to support the nearby Newlands Coal Mine. Construction began in 1982 and basic services were provided quite early including an ambulance service, a school, a licensed town club, and a kindergarten. By 1990, Glenden’s population had grown to 1800.

The future of Glenden is currently at risk of shrinking further, if a secondary mining organisation is approved to build a large workers camp 20km outside of Glenden, meaning the beloved township itself will struggle to maintain a continuous population. This event is supported by Isaac Regional Council to support the Glenden community.

Festival of Small Halls rolls into Glenden on Wednesday, 11 October 2023 with Monique Clare and Shane Pendergast.
