Back Plains Hall, QLD

Back Plains Hall (aka School Of Arts) was originally built in 1905 down the hill from the current site, beside the Back Plains School. It was used for a range of events like dances, political meetings, birthday parties, boxing matches and even as a skating rink. In 1928 it was deliberately set on fire but was able to be repaired. On Christmas day 1937 it was completely destroyed by another fire. 5 months later the committee purchased the old Glenvale hall and moved it to the new hall site up the hill (current site).

Unfortunately in 1941 the hall was once again destroyed by fire. Because of World War 2 and a shortage of building supplies, a new hall wasn’t built until 1950, this time made from besser blocks. A Wizzard lighting system was installed for gas lights at the same time. Hot water wasn’t available until 1963 and electricity was eventually connected in 1970.

Since then, the committee has made a large range of upgrades over the years making it the great hall it is today.

Festival of Small Halls rolls into Back Plains on Thursday, 17 October 2024 with Kellie Loder and Van Dijk & Mcdonald.

Opening the show will be local act Brigitte Meara!

Brigitte Meara works as a registered nurse at St Andrew’s Cancer Care Centre in Toowoomba. Having grown up on a farm, she has developed a deep appreciation for nature and hard work from a young age. For close to 10 years she’s been honing her skills as a guitarist and blending her rural roots with a passion for music. Understanding the importance of small halls, Brigitte recognises their role as vital community centres that bring people together, foster connections and provide support in often hard times. Her unique background fuels her dedication to both music and the community, aiming to contribute positively to the world around her and give back to the communities who have done so much for her.
